The City of St. Catharines Sustainability Strategy
November 2, 2010: The City of St. Catharines Public Art Advisory Committee has released the Call to Artists for its seventh annual juried art exhibition, Tending Our Garden City: A Creative Vision of St. Catharines’ Future.
This year the City of St. Catharines’ Public Art Advisory Committee is inviting artists to submit artwork that reflects a vision of what a “sustainable” St. Catharines could look like. How can we change the world – and our future – by tending to our own “Garden City”?
The exhibit theme follows from the City’s process to develop a plan for the future. The City is currently developing a ‘sustainability’ strategy that features four core themes. Strong community identity, resilience, responsible spending and integrated decision-making are the themes being investigated by community leaders for tomorrow’s community health.
The upcoming exhibit challenges artists to express the many ways that St. Catharines can change for the betterment of the local, and global, communities? Applicants are invited to visit the City’s website and review the discussion paper available there at: www.stcatharines.ca Govern In/Projects & Studies. The Community Advisory Committee for Sustainability is hoping artwork related to the key themes will build greater awareness of the plan’s importance.
Applications for Tending Our Garden City: A Creative Vision of St. Catharines’ Future are available online at www.stcatharines.ca, Experience In/Exhibits & Outdoor Art. The deadline for submissions is March 11, 2011. The exhibit will be on display May 2 – August 19, 2011 at St. Catharines City Hall.
Tending Our Garden City: A Creative Vision of St. Catharines’ Future is a project of the Recreation and Community Services Department’s Cultural Services and the City’s Public Art Advisory Committee. Through its Public Art Policy the City of St. Catharines seeks to encourage all those who care about the community to participate in making art, collecting it and commissioning it.
